The earthquake of 1906 devastated San Francisco. By all accounts it flattened the vast majority of the city, and the remainder was engulfed in the fires that followed forcing residents to flee for their lives.
A commonly told story by tour guides across San Francisco is that residents fled to the waterfront where fireman battled the flames with harbour water.
